Coconut based products we love

The benefits and uses of coconuts continue to impress us, especially in the kitchen.

The health benefits of coconuts means more and more products that enable a broader use for coconuts to surface.

Here is a list of coconut products that have replaced some of our common, everyday ingredients for healthier, delicious recipes.

Coconut Water

Fresh coconuts are harvested when they are either young or mature. Young coconuts have a green shell and are usually sourced from Asia. The familiar brown-haired variety is the more mature coconut, with firmer meat and less water. Young coconuts contain more water and soft, sweet, pliable meat. At Thirsty Buddha we only use the very best young coconuts.

Young coconuts are the most health enhancing. The water in the young coconut is one of the best sources of electrolytes. Electrolytes are responsible for keeping the body properly hydrated, so that muscles and nerves function correctly. It is much more beneficial to drink the water from a young coconut after an intense workout rather than the commercial sports drinks we see advertised.

Coconut water is also low in calories, carbohydrates and sugars, and almost completely fat-free. In addition, it is high in ascorbic acid, B vitamins, and proteins. The soft meat, or flesh, inside the coconut helps to restore oxidative tissue damage and contains a source of healthy fats, proteins, and various vitamins and minerals.

Coconut Vinegar

The sap needed to make coconut vinegar comes from coconut trees that grow in mineral-rich volcanic soil, which allows the coconut flowers to produce a neutral pH, low-glycemic sap. The naturally ferments during the aging process which is between 8 months to a year, then bottled as a healthier vinegar.

Use coconut vinegar the exact same way you would use apple cider vinegar – the uses are almost endless.

The uses for coconut vinegar vary from the kitchen to detoxing to beauty regimens. In the kitchen, you can include coconut vinegar to your favourite salad dressings, marinades, and sauces for extra flavour, along with health benefits. You can add 1-2 tablespoons of coconut vinegar to 8 ounces of warm water and 1-2 tablespoons of sweetener, such as the Healthy Buddha Coconut Nectar for an awesome detox that will support a healthy immune system and a healthy digestive system.

Finally, you can use coconut vinegar as a part of your beauty regimen. Brushing your hair with coconut vinegar and letting it sit for 20-30 minutes will give you shiny, soft hair, and using a cotton ball to pat your face with a small amount of coconut vinegar will help prevent acne and kill bacteria.

Coconut Nectar

We all know that consuming too much refined sugar is not good for us, but what are the alternatives? One natural sweetener that is gaining popularity is coconut nectar. Consisting of the sap from the coconut tree (much like maple syrup), coconut nectar has the benefit of being a raw, pure sweetener that retains all of the health benefits, while other sweeteners lose most of their nutritional value through heating and processing.

The foundation of coconut nectar’s health benefits is in how it is made. It comes from the liquid sap, which is extracted from coconut flowers. When the blossom becomes mature, the nectar is skillfully retrieved by climbing to the top of the towering coconut tree several times a day. The blossom is then tapped to get the sap. The accumulated sap is heated over low temperature after extraction in about 90 minutes. By doing this, fermentation is prevented and a caramel-colored liquid sweetener known as coconut nectar syrup is made.

Throughout the process, there are no chemicals involved. From the extraction process up to the production, it is all natural. There is no need for additives to enrich the flavor since coconut nectar is naturally sweet. Since this nectar is completely natural, organic, unrefined, and preservative free – the majority of the nutrients found in the coconut tree is preserved.

So whether you need a new, healthier alternative for sugary sports drinks, regular vinegar, or even your standard sweeteners, these coconut based products have got you covered.
